Join the Longhorn Startup community in Spring 2014!
There are many ways to get involved with Longhorn Startup next Spring. If you’re a student, you can sign up for the Seminar to get introduced to the community and inspired by great entrepreneurs telling their stories first-hand. If you have a startup, you can join the Lab and get support, mentoring and college credit for working on your startup. Austin community members can get involved by mentoring a student team and attending our Demo Day at the end of each semester.
Take the seminar
Longhorn Startup Seminar introduces students to the world of startups though the experiences of people who have built successes and learned from failures. Students will also get a chance to see student startups from Longhorn Startup Lab present on a regular basis and participate in numerous optional networking events.
This track is open enrollment to all students at UT Austin. Any student from any college can register for the following course numbers:
- CS178 (53533) = Longhorn Startup Seminar (CNS/CS)
- ES177 = Longhorn Startup Seminar (Cockrell)
Take the lab
Longhorn Startup Lab is the ultimate startup challenge for student entrepreneurs. Students must apply to the program as a team and should already have a startup in progress. In addition to the lecture series and networking events, student teams can expect hands-on mentoring from hand-picked entrepreneurs and experts from every vertical and discipline. This track requires professor approval. Apply now with your team.
Be a mentor
Calling all Austin entrepreneurs, programmers, designers, marketers and lawyers! Volunteer to be a mentor for a Longhorn Startup team of student entrepreneurs next semester. Come to the Mentor Happy Hour on Thursday, January 9 at Capital Factory to learn more and meet the instructors. Then attend the Mentor Speed Dating on Tuesday, January 14 to meet the teams.
Support the class
One of the assignments for each student team is to “sell” a local Austin company the opportunity to buy pizza for the class and come introduce themselves at the beginning of the evening lecture. Contact Laurie Graham if you’re interested in supporting a class (costs $350-$500 to buy dinner for the class).
Join us at Demo Day
At the end of each semester we have a Demo Day where the students get up on stage and pitch their startup to potential investors and the Austin startup Founderatti. Join us on Thursday to see the 12 startup from Fall 2013 as well as hear from Cotter Cunningham, founder of recent Austin IPO RetailMeNot; as well as Mark Cuban, founder of Broadcast.com, owner of the Dallas Mavericks and “shark” on the TV show Shark Tank.
